From the Desk of the Club Webmeister (John Anast)
Well, its been sometime since we've had a newsletter. I think this is a good time to thank Dale Mercer for all the great issues he put out. Its a ton of work and you never really appreciate something till its gone! Thanks Dale. Hopefully this first electronic newsletter will set the trend and make it less burdensome to get one out each month. Not everyone is on email yet so we'll have to send out a few by US Mail but there is no guarantee this will continue to happen, so if you are reading this on paper...go get email (-:
Damn its cold, well not quite Canada cold, but cold enough to put a damper on flying for a while. Its 22F (as reported by the cool weather link on our home page) as I'm writing this, I know...what a whimp. This is the last issue for 2002 and I think we had a pretty good year. The club is up to 42 members which is near a record number, and there's about $800 in the kitty! At the last meeting we elected officers in a painless 5 minutes of discussion and ratification. All the old officers are back, except Bob Gaertner has agreed to be our new club President. The other officers can be found on the home page Officers section. I'm sure Bob would welcome suggestions from all on club activities and ideas for meeting topics. It's an old cliche but the club is only as good as its members so I challenge every member to come up with at least one good idea to help keep the club lively and growing (and fun of course!). The next meeting is Dec 10th and I hope that we can do some show and tell. Bring what every you've been hiding and give everyone a glimpse of what you've been up to.
It has been brought up in informal discussions that perhaps we spend too much of our treasury on Pizzas at the meetings and folks are basically showing up to have dinner vs a heli meeting. I'm divided on this one, I like pizza but it does cost every month and I'm not sure it really affects attendance all that much. Lately we haven't done much with the treasury anyway so maybe its a moot point but we have had expenses in the past like the new canopy shade we bought for the field and the repairs to the lawn mower. Its up to us all how we spend out money so speak up.
I think we've been a little lax in organizing our fun flys lately. We had some really fun events this year but they were not well attended and not advertised outside of the club. I'm proposing we try to pull of at least one good sized fun fly next year, pulling in some out of towners like we've done in the past. We've had good support from the vendors and can probably expect some good prizes again. Speaking of fun flys, I really want to thank Amin Abirached for offering his yard for our funflys this year. He certainly has plenty of space and his wife makes a mean salsa!
We also had some close calls this year on the safety front. As safety officer I always worry I'm not being strict enough, so look out, this might be the year for some tough love dudes. I really challenge everyone to think about everything you do at the field and how it might impact your fellow fliers as well as yourself. This is especially true at Slim Helsons field where quarters are close and the neighbors are not too far away!
I hope to see everyone at the Dec meeting, if not have a Merry Christmas with lots of chopper goodies under the tree.....john
